A Pull-Based Approach for Incremental View Maintenance in Mobile DWs

With the rapid growth in mobile and wireless technologies and the availability, pervasiveness and cost effectiveness of wireless networks, mobile computers are quickly becoming the normal front-end devices for accessing enterprise data. In this paper, we are addressing the issue of efficient delivery of business decision support data in the form of summary tables to mobile clients − mobile OLAP views. More precisely, we address the OLAP view update problem for maintaining the consistency between a mobile OLAP view and the underlying DW server: the content of the mobile OLAP view could become incoherent with the DW server when the content of the DW server is changed. We propose a pull-based approach that enables an OLAP view to be updated at a mobile client in an incremental manner, requiring the client to request changes to its view to the server. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach with experimental results.
